Pelvic Floor Acupuncture in San Diego

San Diego Acupuncture and Massage provides pelvic floor acupuncture in Mission Valley West for both women and men. Common reasons people come in include chronic pelvic pain, stress incontinence and urinary urgency, painful sex, tailbone and sacral pain, postpartum pelvic floor recovery, and chronic prostatitis or chronic pelvic pain syndrome. Treatment is always external — there is no internal, vaginal, or rectal needling at any point — and points closer to the pelvic floor are only ever used with your prior agreement. Acupuncture works well alongside pelvic floor physical therapy. Located at 1545 Hotel Circle South, Suite #275, with free parking and easy freeway access from Hillcrest, Bankers Hill, North Park, Pacific Beach, La Jolla, and across San Diego.

Does pelvic floor acupuncture involve internal needling?

No. Pelvic floor acupuncture is always external. Nothing internal, vaginal, or rectal is part of this treatment at any point. Most sessions use points on the low back, sacrum, lower abdomen, hips, and legs, with you clothed or lightly draped. Some presentations benefit from surface points located closer to the pelvic floor itself. These are discussed with you in advance, performed with gloves and full draping, and never required — treatment is effective without them, and many patients choose not to include them.

Do men get pelvic floor treatment?

Yes. Pelvic floor dysfunction is often framed as a women's issue, which leaves many men without answers. Men come in with chronic pelvic or perineal pain, urinary urgency or hesitancy, pain after prolonged sitting, post-prostatectomy incontinence, and diagnoses of chronic prostatitis or chronic pelvic pain syndrome that haven't responded to antibiotics. Men make up a significant part of pelvic health practice here in San Diego.

Should I be doing Kegels?

It depends on whether your pelvic floor is weak or tight. Kegels help a weak pelvic floor, but they can worsen symptoms when the pelvic floor is already chronically tight — which causes pain, urgency, painful sex, and difficulty emptying. If Kegels have made you feel worse, that's meaningful clinical information and worth discussing before you continue them.
